Is carpet flooring durable enough for children?
Some carpeting is so stain-resistant and durable that a pet-friendly warranty backs it. Choose this type of floor covering if you're part of an active household that includes children, or opt for a high-quality style made of durable fiber.
Family-owned Carpetland's Custom Carpet & Tile, in business since 1954, has a showroom in Richmond, Virginia, where you can find brands by top companies like Stanton and Dixie Home.
Fibers
Match carpet fiber and home space, and your new carpeting will serve you well throughout its expected lifespan. Durable nylon and triexta are ideal for high-traffic areas like family rooms. Polyester is fine for bedrooms, while water-resistant olefin is a good choice for basements.
Wool
If your top concern is quality, not price, wool carpeting may be the floor you're looking for. In general, it lasts twice as long as synthetic carpeting. In addition, wool resists crushing and has moisture-absorption properties, excellent color retention, and makeup that naturally repels dirt.
Styles
Carpeting is available in a loop pile and softer cut pile styles that are low, medium, or high in fiber length. The shortest loop pile carpets are most durable since dirt remains near the surface, where it is easily removed. In addition, when the loops are cut, fibers are twisted to increase lifespan.
Padding
First-rate padding beneath your new carpet will keep it from rubbing against the subfloor and wearing out prematurely. Padding cushions fall, too, and it provides comfort underfoot and muffling noise. It also stops drafts that can seep through a porous material like carpeting.
